With support from a generous grant by its maritime charity, Trinity House renovated the Visitor Centre at Portland Bill Lighthouse. Opened to the public on 29 March 2015, the centre features an impressive main exhibit where visitors can learn about the history of the lighthouse and its keepers, as well as Trinity House, the organisation that has safeguarded mariners for over 500 years. The exhibition includes interactive displays, historical artefacts, and the thrilling ‘Into The Dark’ experience, which simulates a stormy sea journey.
In 2019, Portland Bill Lighthouse underwent a modernisation project that updated its navigation light. The light’s range was adjusted from 25 to 18 nautical miles, and new LED lanterns were installed. The iconic rotating optic was carefully removed and placed on display at the base of the lighthouse tower.
